Artist talk at show opening; photo by Rick Paulsen Photography
Rebecca Shapiro, Lisa Sonora Beam, Matt Blair and I gave an hour long artist talk at the opening celebration. Here is the recording if you would like to listen to it. We each talk about the work in the show as well as the process of getting there. {Special note to my mother: I know the ships match your Victorian house better than my abstract contemporary stuff.}

Inviting You to Participate
My dream is to have this project continue and to invite other artists to collaborate. Perhaps travel to other locations where we engage artists there. Perhaps to build a community online where creatives all over share creative responses to their own stories. Perhaps teaching workshops where we share the creative approach to personal storytelling.
Matt talking about his soundscapes
Matt Blair is the first creative to produce a response to our project. He has designed soundscapes for each of the artists, which will be published as an iPhone app and will be available any day. You can hear them at the Beyond The Story app website http://www.beyondthestoryapp.com

Mentioned during the talk
Love notes from people who attended
We were so glad we asked for love notes. I typed them up and sent them to everyone the next day. It is so helpful to have reminders that people liked aspects of what we put together, especially in those post opening times of doubt.I want to write these to other artists at all the shows I attend, since it was so heartwarming to have experienced them myself.
Mixed media: Acrylic collage on panel, 18″ x 24″, $800
From my series about transformation. It’s not that I didn’t know there were things that weren’t quite right, I had just learned to ignore them. I needed to learn to face things head on and stop falling in love with potential.

This is the first panel in a series about transformation. I’ve always had inner knowing. It just took me a long time to consistently listen to it. Part of transforming my world was learning to allow it to guide parts of my life.

I fought hard to get to art school. Off I went, full of passion. I was totally unprepared for the brutality of the critique system. After fighting so hard with my parents just to get there I was afraid to tell them how hard I was struggling emotionally. Instead I just coped in the best way I knew how. Let’s just say, some of those things didn’t serve me very well.
The pure joy that art had always been was complicated by discovering how much my work sucked on a daily basis. The internal flame did not get stamped out but it sure got small.

Then: Desired- mixed media acrylic collage on panel, 9″ x 12″, $200
Part of the multiple panel series, Then. This one was created thinking about how so often, especially when I was young, I wanted things desperately and with singular focus. Sometimes when I got them, they weren’t quite what I imagined. Like art school. That is a much longer story.
