I like the range of texture and layers I can achieve by printing on the Gelli plate. At a certain point, it gets harder to keep the colors clear. To avoid a muddy look, I started painting back into the prints in addition to drawing on them with colored pencil.

I began printing on Kabernet dry wax paper which allowed me to print many layers yet retain some translucency in the paper. This made it perfect for gluing onto other colors of paper. The thin deli paper is easy to tear, yet glues down firmly using acrylic mediums.
More layers, more memories coming together
Collage increased my ability to depict more layers. I could still get the spontaneous marks from the gelli printing, yet contrast them with more controlled areas and other color feelings.
I’ve started a Facebook group with Lisa Sonora Beam and Rebecca Shapiro to discuss all things Visual+Memoir. We’d love to have you join us there if you are interested in this topic. We’ll be talking about the work we are doing for our show in Sept/Oct.
