I fought hard to get to art school. Off I went, full of passion. I was totally unprepared for the brutality of the critique system. After fighting so hard with my parents just to get there I was afraid to tell them how hard I was struggling emotionally. Instead I just coped in the best way I knew how. Let’s just say, some of those things didn’t serve me very well.
The pure joy that art had always been was complicated by discovering how much my work sucked on a daily basis. The internal flame did not get stamped out but it sure got small.

In art school I learned it’s hard to suck on a regular basis even with *friendly* critiques…I was really glad I didn’t go straight from high school.

Laura,
Good point about age. I was 17 when I went to art school, emotionally still very young. I didn’t have a lot of reserve to draw on.
